Community Paediatric
Respiratory Physiotherapy

Specialist respiratory support for children with complex needs — delivered in the community, built around your care team, and focused on preventing deterioration and reducing hospital dependency.

This service is launching soon. If you have a referral to discuss in the meantime, please get in touch and we will be happy to advise.

We have a team of highly specialised paediatric respiratory physiotherapists with advanced expertise in managing complex respiratory needs within community and home settings.

Our focus is on building sustainable, clinically robust management that reduces the risk of deterioration, prevents avoidable hospital admission, and gives care teams the confidence and competency to respond effectively.

What We Support

We work with children who have:

  • Complex respiratory needs linked to neurodisability or long-term conditions
  • Recurrent chest infections or secretion management needs
  • Difficulties with airway clearance
  • Risk of respiratory deterioration or hospital admission

Our Approach

We focus on assessment, planning, and capability building:

  • Specialist respiratory assessment
  • Individualised management plans
  • Airway clearance and breathing strategies
  • Clear escalation guidance for deterioration
  • Targeted training for caregivers and care teams

Where We Make a Difference

Respiratory care is often shared across teams — but chest physiotherapy and airway clearance management are specialist physiotherapy-led skills. We regularly work with families and care teams to improve outcomes in areas where targeted specialist input makes the biggest difference:

Optimising airway clearance

We can review and tailor existing routines so they are matched to the child's specific secretion profile and adjusted as their needs change.

Strengthening care plan structure

We can develop clinically robust plans with clear reasoning, review mechanisms, and documentation that supports the whole team.

Clarifying escalation pathways

We can establish clear, accessible guidance on early deterioration signs and when to escalate — giving care teams the confidence to respond quickly.

Our input ensures respiratory management is:

Suction Training & Airway Clearance

Suction training is a key component of many care packages, and a common area of challenge. The majority of children with complex respiratory needs require daily airway clearance support — yet this is an area where caregiver confidence, consistency, and competency most often fall short without structured physiotherapy input.

We Provide

  • Assessment of airway clearance needs
  • Structured suction training for caregivers and staff
  • Guidance on safe delegation and use within care plans
  • Competency assessment and ongoing review

This Ensures Suction Is

  • Safe, appropriate, and evidence-based
  • Consistently delivered across the care team
  • Embedded within a clear respiratory management approach
  • Underpinned by formal competency verification

Local Specialist Provision

We work with locally based respiratory physiotherapists, allowing for greater responsiveness, reduced travel burden, and continuity of care across visits and reviews.

  • Improved access to specialist input
  • Greater flexibility in delivery and review
  • Reduced reliance on long-distance clinicians

Who We Work With

Our role is to complement existing care, providing specialist respiratory expertise where it is needed most.

  • Case managers
  • Care providers and support teams
  • Families and caregivers
  • Existing clinical teams

Referrals

Referrals are typically made via case managers or care teams. If you are unsure whether a child is appropriate for the service, we are happy to discuss and advise — no formal referral needed to start the conversation.
