Orthopaedic Conditions

Managing bones, joints and musculoskeletal function

About Orthopaedic Conditions

Orthopaedic conditions encompass a wide range of disorders affecting the bones, joints, muscles, and connective tissues. In children and young people, these include developmental conditions (hip dysplasia, clubfoot / talipes equinovarus), traumatic injuries (fractures, ligament injuries), growth-related conditions (Osgood-Schlatter disease, Sever's disease, Scheuermann's kyphosis), and inflammatory conditions (juvenile idiopathic arthritis). Physiotherapy plays a central role in the conservative management of many orthopaedic conditions and is an essential component of rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery. NICE guidelines and the NHS musculoskeletal framework emphasise early physiotherapy intervention to prevent long-term complications.

Orthopaedic conditions are common across all ages. Growth-related orthopaedic conditions typically present during periods of rapid growth — in particular during early childhood and adolescence. Developmental hip dysplasia affects approximately 1–3% of newborns.
