Post-Surgical Rehab

Safe, effective recovery after surgery

About Post-Surgical Rehab

Post-surgical rehabilitation is the physiotherapy-led process of restoring function, strength, and mobility following surgery. In paediatric and young adult physiotherapy, this commonly follows orthopaedic procedures (tendon releases, osteotomies, joint stabilisations), neurosurgical interventions (selective dorsal rhizotomy — SDR, baclofen pump insertion), scoliosis spinal fusion, limb lengthening procedures, and complex hip reconstructions. Early and consistent physiotherapy after surgery is essential to achieve the best functional outcomes and prevent complications such as joint stiffness, muscle atrophy, and scar tissue formation. The NHS and NICE emphasise physiotherapy as a core component of surgical care pathways.

Any child or young adult recovering from surgery affecting mobility, posture, strength, or physical function may benefit from post-surgical physiotherapy. It is particularly important following procedures carried out as part of the management of cerebral palsy, scoliosis, hip dysplasia, or acquired brain injury.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Post-operative weakness, swelling, and pain at the surgical site
  • Reduced range of movement and joint stiffness following immobilisation
  • Altered gait patterns due to pain, weakness, or structural changes
  • Fatigue and reduced activity tolerance
  • Risk of muscle atrophy from reduced activity
  • Anxiety about movement and returning to previous activities
  • Scar tissue formation and associated restrictions

How Physiotherapy Helps

  • Early mobility and bed exercises to prevent complications and aid recovery
  • Progressive weight-bearing and walking rehabilitation
  • Strengthening exercises targeting the muscles around the surgical site
  • Range of movement restoration and management of post-operative stiffness
  • Scar management and desensitisation techniques
  • Hydrotherapy for early, pain-free movement in a supported environment
  • Return to sport or leisure activities — graduated and goal-focused
  • Education for families on safe management and exercise between sessions
  • Pre-operative assessment and prehabilitation to optimise surgical outcomes
